Banks are not obliged to retain Robbie's Lottery and Smartplay as customers

3/18/2019

On Tuesday, March 19 th  2019, the court ruled in summary proceedings brought by lottery organizers Robbie’s Lottery and Smartplay against Maduro & Curiel's Bank and Windward Islands Bank.

The purpose of the summary proceedings was the cancellation by the banks of the banking relationship with the claimants.

The judge ruled, after weighing up the interests, that the banks cannot be obliged to retain Robbie's Lottery and Smartplay as customers. In particular, the court places a lot of weight on the criminal convictions of account holders in 2016 for tax fraud and money laundering (the Bientu case).

The claimants' claims to order the banks to continue the banking relationship have therefore been rejected.
